The late breakfast
Two cups of coffee cooling while the rooftops turn gold
Coffee cools in a cup painted with violet flowers.
The table is a board of blue and green squares that no one is playing on.
Past the rail, red roofs and two domes stand in yellow light.
A pair of slippers waits by the chair. A watering can rests in the corner.
Someone was here a moment ago.
The croissant can wait for them.
The work
The Late Breakfast is the fifth of six paintings in The Little Escapes Collection by Parigya Gupta, who works in Gurugram. Each painting shows an imagined place. Gupta says the paintings are "not really about the places" but about "how we want to feel when we are there." Here she paints a small balcony on a bright morning in acrylic on canvas. A croissant and toast with jam wait on a checked table. Two cups sit with no one beside them. The painting measures 22 × 15 cm.
In the artist’s words
“Because some mornings deserve to linger. Coffee that gets cold because you are too busy enjoying the view. A croissant you take your sweet time with. Flowers quietly blooming beside you. An escape into unhurried mornings and nowhere-you-need-to-be.”
