The Last Samurai
Blue fire behind him, cold water at his feet
Blue fire climbs the cloth like breath on a cold morning.
Under the straw hat, no eyes. Only a mouth that has decided.
The blade is lit orange at its edge, the last warm thing here.
His robe comes apart into ash and ink.
Water jumps white around his feet.
Below, his shadow waits in the grey, holding still for him.
The work
The Last Samurai is an acrylic painting from 2024 by Komal Singh. A lone swordsman stands in shallow water. A straw hat hides his eyes. Pale blue flame rises around him like smoke and his dark robes break into flecks of orange and black. Water splashes up at his feet. His shadow falls into the still surface below. Singh lives in Faridabad. Her college is Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, Delhi University. She also makes paper animations from her own drawings.
