The Encroachment of the Ganges
A red boat waits where the sun sinks into the river
The sky moves from ink blue to mustard.
Clouds come apart like torn paper with sharp corners.
The sun has slipped under the water and still glows there.
Its light lies on the river in broken gold steps.
A red boat stands empty under its dark roof.
Nobody is aboard. The water keeps the last warm colour.
The work
Asmita Das studies at The Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship in Kolkata. In The Encroachment of the Ganges (2025) she works in the wash technique, a process she finds "very peaceful and calming." Soft washes of watercolour turn the sky from deep blue to yellow. The clouds and the sun's path on the water break into sharp angular shapes. A red boat with a canopy rests on the right. Das likes "simplifying the complicated with light, color and composition."
In the artist’s words
“I like to use the wash technique of painting most of the time because I find the whole process very peaceful and calming. I merge complicated structures of buildings, objects and nature with my experiment: simplifying the complicated with light, colour and composition. I paint in wash style so that I can meditate and calm my mind, even within chaos.”
