Kanika sang
The divine grace
Half her face is red. The other half is waiting
Gold letters climb down the dark like a prayer said slowly.
Her eye is closed. Her mouth is a small red bow.
Sindoor spreads across one cheek like heat across a stone.
A white ring hangs from her nose, thin as a held breath.
The crown and the collar rise from the surface in coils you could trace with a finger.
She is quiet. The red is not.
The work
Kanika Sang paints a goddess in profile against a dark ground. Bright red sindoor covers one side of her face. A Sanskrit verse to the goddess runs down the left side in gold letters. Sang works in acrylic. Raised lines of 3D outliner and Mouldit give the crown and the heavy jewellery a surface you can almost touch. For Sang the red stands for the strength that waits quietly inside every woman. The work dates from 2023. Sang is from Ambala. Her college is CGC University Mohali.
In the artist’s words
“I have portrayed a Goddess as feminine strength, courage and resilience. Bright red sindoor on one side of her face symbolises shakti and the divine energy within a woman. The contrast between her calm expression and the bold red shows a woman's gentleness and her immense inner strength. Every woman carries a form of Maa Durga within her.”
