Survived??
A flood held still in green and smoky glass
A pond stopped in the middle of a thought.
Smoky brown stones sit inside green water that will not move.
One square block climbs to the top and stays there, like a box kept dry.
Small beads of glass cling to its side.
Light goes in and comes back grey.
Everything the water touched is still here, only heavier.
The work
Aakansha Gupta comes from Kishanganj in Bihar. As a child, Gupta lived through a flood there. The sculptures in this series ask how one disaster can break the comfort of daily life for good. In this series, high-fired clay usually holds things still. Glass brings the other side: fragile, broken and see-through like water. Survived?? is made only of glass. Blue-green, grey and smoky brown lumps press together. One pale square block stands on top.
In the artist’s words
“I integrate glass into these compositions to create a direct material contrast. Where the high-fired clay offers rigid durability, the glass introduces vulnerability and fractured transparency, mimicking the unpredictable nature of water. Ultimately, these sculptures archive a childhood trauma, questioning how a single environmental event permanently shatters the baseline of daily comfort.”
