Stillness and Spirits
One skull hangs above. One rests beside the apples
Green cloth falls behind the table like deep water.
A skull hangs in the dark, its horns pale as old wax.
Below, another lies down on rust-coloured cloth.
Red apples, green pears and one orange glow near its long jaw.
Glass bottles hold a thin line of light.
The fruit is still sweet. The bone has finished waiting.
The work
Almaa Solkar of Devrukh College of Art and Design in Ratnagiri paints this still life in oil on paper. Two animal skulls, two bottles and fresh fruit share the picture. Each object has a role. The skulls stand for death. The fruits stand for life and renewal. The bottles stand for human desire and the pleasure that can push us toward mortality. Solkar arranges them as a full circle from life and joy through indulgence to death. The painting measures 86 × 68 cm.
In the artist’s words
“Stillness and Spirits is an oil on paper still life where dead animal skulls, wine bottles and fruits compose a life cycle. The skulls signify inevitable death. Fruits symbolise life and renewal. The bottles stand for human desire and pleasure that can push toward mortality. The arrangement traces a full circle from life and joy through indulgence to death.”
