The Open Studio / Shruti
Shruti
spooning
Knees, elbows and a smiling cat share one small space
Elbows meet knees and nobody minds.
Blue shorts, a red shirt, skin cut into warm wedges.
The cat in the corner keeps one eye on the music.
Records turn without a sound.
Green light leans in from above.
Under everything a quiet purple hums and holds them close.
The work
In spooning, Shruti breaks two resting figures into sharp planes of colour. One figure in blue shorts lies along the top. A smaller figure in red curls up below. Their arms and knees fold together. A striped cloth, two round discs like records and an orange cat fill the edges. Shruti comes from the College of Art in New Delhi. She begins each work with a rough sketch and a layout. She always starts with a purple underpainting. She leaves parts of it showing so that the colour glows.
In the artist’s words
“I always start with a rough idea, a layout and a base sketch. Then I experiment and go with the flow. I always start with a purple underpainting because it gives a nice glowing effect. I leave the underpainting to show on purpose so that it glows.”
