Prachi Vishwakarma
Shiva
Eyes closed under a full moon, he holds the whole night still
A moon wide as a well hangs behind his head.
The bull leans close, grey as wet stone, a yellow mark between its eyes.
His skin is the blue of deep water at night.
His eyes stay shut. His hands rest on a lotus as if it were warm.
White daisies keep watch in the dark grass.
Everything here is quiet enough to hear breathing.
The work
Prachi Vishwakarma studies at Raja Mansingh Tomar Music and Arts University in Bhopal. In Shiva she paints the god with his eyes closed. His skin is deep blue. His hands rest on a pink lotus. Behind him stands Nandi the bull under a full moon. Vishwakarma draws on Indian culture, spirituality, nature and folk art. She keeps changing colours and backgrounds until a painting feels right. She finds it hard to know when to stop.
In the artist’s words
“Some of my work has traditional Indian influences, especially in the subjects, symbols and colours. I used flowers, water, eyes, animals, feminine forms and spiritual imagery because they helped me express ideas that were sometimes difficult to explain with words. I like the idea that two people can look at the same painting and feel something completely different.”
