A doll keeps watch over a cupboard full of folded days
The cupboard doors open like two yellow curtains.
Jeans hang blue and tired from thin hangers.
Shelves hold folded reds and greens, pressed flat by years of use.
A doll in a red dress sits at the edge, her yellow hair bright in the dark.
Below her the clothes slide into a soft heap.
Purple glows through every gap, like the last light in a room at dusk.
The work
Shruti paints an open cupboard in Rosy. Folded clothes fill the shelves. Jeans hang from hangers at the top. A doll in a red dress sits on a ledge near the bottom with a heap of cloth below her. Shruti always begins with a rough idea and a base sketch. She then lays down a purple underpainting. She leaves parts of it showing on purpose so that the colours glow. Here that purple shows in the shadows between the shelves. The canvas is tall and narrow.
In the artist’s words
“I always start with a rough idea, a layout and a base sketch. Whenever I see texture I love to replicate it using thick impasto strokes. I use lots of complementary colours. I always start with a purple underpainting because it gives a nice glowing effect. I intentionally leave the underpainting to show so that it glows.”
