Sushil Yadav
Roots, Memories, Ruins, Reconstruction
A roof left unfinished on purpose, over people made of earth
Orange clay heaped like two small hills, scaled with the marks of fingers.
Out of the gap between them bodies climb and hold on.
One arm ends in an open mouth, a hollow pipe of earth.
A soot shadow sits on the right hill where the fire touched it.
Above, dark sticks crossed and tied: a roof that waits for its next pair of hands.
Grey light. Nothing finished. Everyone still holding.
The work
In the village in Kushinagar district where Sushil Yadav grew up, mud houses soften in the rain and return to the soil. In this work Yadav builds human forms in terracotta, coil by coil. They rise out of broken ground and lean on each other. Above them stands a frame of bamboo sticks tied together. It is not finished. “The structure is incomplete on purpose,” he says, “because I see rebuilding as something that goes on.” He makes it in 2026, in the final year of his MVA.
In the artist’s words
