The Open Studio / Siddharth
Siddharth
possession
An embrace that holds a lock, open or about to close
Lavender air, thin as early light.
A bare back the colour of turmeric and clay.
Over the shoulder a face rests with closed eyes.
Plum-dark hands turn a brass lock in the small space between them.
The shackle stands open.
Is this a gift or a keeping?
To be held close is also to be held.
The work
Siddharth is an artist from the College of art in New Delhi. Siddharth has lived between family homes and rented spaces. In that life a key carries memory, duty and hope. So keys and locks return again and again in the paintings. In Possession two figures hold each other close. One presses an open brass padlock to the other's bare back. The colours are earthy and warm. The brush marks stay visible on the canvas as a record of the hand at work.

This painting explores the relationship between love, protection, and control. The lock held between the figures suggests how relationships can bring people close while also creating boundaries. It reflects the complicated feelings we experience when we want to protect someone but also want freedom.
