Perch
Real feathers gather around one small flame far from home
Pale sticks curve like the ribs of a wing that lost its bird.
Real feathers lie against the paint, brown and black and speckled.
A white breast bends down toward a glass lamp.
One small flame stands still in the dusk.
The sun is a soft orange circle in the corner.
Everyone here has come a long way to sit near this light.
The work
Harish Sharma paints people who leave home to find work. His family came from a village in Bihar. His father went to Delhi first. Later the family built a home in Haryana. In Perch, Sharma paints a frame of pale bones shaped like a wing. He sets real feathers on the canvas over acrylic paint. The feathers gather above a small oil lamp. Sharma sees them as travellers from many places. They take warmth from one flame before they fly on.
In the artist’s words
“Perch brings diverse global travellers together at a skeletal sanctuary. They draw vital warmth and resilience from a central flame. It is a literal and symbolic source of energy that fuels their collective flight toward a better future.”
