Peace
Two pale figures fight in a corner as a blue dove rises
Grey comes in from every side like smoke after rain.
A blue bird pushes up from a black bowl with its wings scratched in thin lines.
Above it a small box holds a strip of rainbow, folded shut.
A row of white waves curls along a wall that goes nowhere.
Down in the dark corner two thin white figures lean into each other.
From here you cannot tell if they hold or strike.
The work
Aniket Dharmendra Varma is an MFA Painting student at Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai. He paints in oil, layer by layer. He does not draw a plan first. His paintings begin with what he has lived through that week. Peace shows both war and peace. Doves fly through it. Two figures attack each other. They could be anyone. “In the end, we all belong to the same race,” Varma writes. “That is enough.” The canvas is 76 × 91 cm.
In the artist’s words
