Path
A pale path runs under red trees into the shade
Red bark twists up out of yellow light.
The path is grey water, slow and cool.
Purple flowers lean in from both edges.
At the centre the trees close into a dark room.
The pastel lies thick where the leaves are brightest.
You could step in here and keep walking.
The work
Akash Goenka lives and works in New Delhi. Goenka works from close observation of trees, paths and flowers. Path is oil pastel on paper, 33 × 24 cm. The colour goes on in thick layers. Red-brown trunks bend over a pale grey path. Yellow leaves catch the light. Purple flowers crowd the edges. For Goenka the hardest part is knowing when to stop before a picture is overworked. Goenka has made art seriously since 2019. Painting began in a difficult time and still matters deeply.
In the artist’s words
“My practice is rooted in close observation of the world around me. My landscapes come from observing familiar places, paths and flowers. I'm in love with oil pastels. They let me build up colour and atmosphere in layers. I'm less interested in making a beautiful painting than a moving one: something that makes someone pause and feel anything at all.”
