A grey that turns out to be every colour at once
Red, green, blue and violet crowd so close they turn to grey.
It hums like a radio caught between two stations.
A thin white line holds the noise in place.
In the top corner a few pale marks try to speak.
Stand near and the grey comes apart in your eyes.
Stand back and it closes again like still water.
The work
This gouache dates from 2016 and comes from Gurgaon, where it is linked to UPES. It measures 50 × 40 × 12 cm. Up close the surface breaks into countless tiny specks of red, green, blue and violet. Step back and the specks settle into one even grey. A thin white line runs around the picture just inside its edge, like a frame drawn inside a frame. Small pale marks sit in the top left corner. Nothing else interrupts the field.
