The Open Studio / Nikita Dhali
Nikita Dhali
Oneness
One line that never breaks, turning until the circle fills
A blue line turns and turns and does not stop.
Dark red spots float in it like seeds in water.
Thin green threads slip between the rings.
At the left edge a pink moon is rising, wet and blotted.
High up a small rose spiral rests, closed and quiet.
The eye follows the line inward and forgets the way out.
The work
Nikita Dhali makes spirals. Each one starts as a circle drawn with no break in the line. Dhali first studied commerce in a small town where no one knew painting was a subject. Now Dhali is doing a Master's at The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in Vadodara. After a Bachelor's in Painting there were no rules and no one to give guidance. Dhali began to make patterns and the spirals came. In Oneness a small pink spiral sits inside a large blue one. Dhali calls the practice sadhana.
In the artist’s words
“I felt like making a circle without any break in the line and that's how spirals happened to me. I can say they chose me. Since then I haven't stopped. It became my breath, my sadhana. I used my soul on my canvas: my life, my breath, my consciousness, my very existence.”
