Om
One unbroken line, turned until it became a flame
A red seed stands in a dark round pond.
Its skin is a coil of thread, wound and wound to a still centre.
Around it, pale smoke climbs in slow curls edged with cold blue.
Each curl holds its own small whirl, like a thumbprint.
The black between them is deep water.
The red does not move. Everything else rises past it.
The work
Nikita Dhali paints with a line that does not break. In Om, a red form like a flame fills the centre of a round canvas. It is built from close rings of red line. Pale wave shapes rise around it. Each wave is made of small spirals too. Dhali first studied CS and B.Com in a small town. Dhali now studies for a Master's at MSU Baroda. The spirals began after a Bachelor's in Painting with "No rules, no guidance." Dhali calls the practice "my breath, my sadhana."
In the artist’s words
“I started creating patterns. I felt like making a circle without any break in the line. That's how spirals happened to me. They really chose me to create them. They became my breath, my sadhana. I used my soul on my canvas: my life, my breath, my consciousness, my very existence.”
