Objects and Spaces II
An open door, a slant of light and nobody home
Grey dust rubbed into paper until it becomes a wall.
A door stands open on a dark that has no floor.
Light comes in at a slant and lies there, pale as chalk.
White flakes show through where the charcoal gave way.
No one is here.
Still the door was opened by a hand.
The work
Nitya Bhaumik Joshi draws the rooms of her home. First she walks through the house with a camera and photographs each room as it is. Nothing is tidied. Here a doorway stands in a corner and a band of light falls across the wall. Joshi first tries to paint her photographs. Halfway through she stops. The colour takes away the silence. So she turns to charcoal. The drawing belongs to her final series at Anant National University.
In the artist’s words
“A corner of the artist's home drawn in charcoal. No one is in it. Everything in it says that someone lives there.”
