Mohammad Sadikot
Negotiated Space LOT-05
A body that melts into the chair it rests in
A red chair, worn to the colour of dried henna.
Pale arms close around a speckled weight, like a loaf held to the chest.
Below the hands, the body stops being a body.
It pours down in brown strokes, slow as river mud.
Ballpoint lines catch the light like thread in old cloth.
No one can say where the sitter ends and the chair begins.
The work
Mohammad Sadikot is an artist from Pune at the JJ School of Art, Design and Architecture. In this small work on paper, 16.51 × 13.97 cm, a pale figure sits in a deep red chair. Sadikot builds the painting slowly with water-poster colour, layer by layer. Black ballpoint pen adds fine, close lines. Below the folded arms, the body melts into brown paint and joins the chair. This is on purpose. For Sadikot, people are never fixed. The hardest part is knowing when to stop.
In the artist’s words
“I try to paint people the way they feel, not just how they look. My figures blend into the space around them, almost like they're dissolving into it. People are never fixed. We change with our mood, our surroundings, the people we're with. The hardest part is knowing when to stop.”
