“Nature Miniature”
A butterfly pauses beside two hibiscus flowers in pressed brown ink
Brown lines on a cream page, thin as hair.
Two hibiscus flowers turn their dark throats to the light.
A butterfly holds still at the edge of the square.
The plate has pressed a quiet window into the paper.
One corner of it is soft and round.
Nothing here is loud. The ink settles like dust on an old ledge.
The work
Aman Kumar, of RIMT University, is a printmaker from Ludhiana. Most of his recent prints show old buildings and sacred stories. Nature Miniature is quieter. Two hibiscus flowers open beside their leaves. A butterfly comes in from the top left. Fine lines in brown ink shade each petal. Kumar marks the print AP 1/1 and writes "Acrylic sheet" in pencil below the image. In his statement he speaks of intaglio and "a rich, sepia-toned plate tone". This small print carries the same warm brown.

To bring these to life, I primarily worked with woodcuts for the landscape and narrative pieces, carving into the blocks to create intense, graphic blacks and crisp white negative spaces. For the cathedral piece, I switched gears and used an etching/intaglio technique, which allowed me to get those sketchy, fine architectural lines and a rich,…
