Memory
Some memories are kept in jars, sealed and numbered
A red lid, numbered like a drawer in a museum.
Inside, dark stones press their faces to the glass.
Across the floor lies a pale stripe of window light, cut into bars.
A mauve cloth rests over something the shape of a sleeper.
Under the bed, small jars wait in rows.
On the wall a gold garland glints on a frame.
Everything is kept. Nothing is opened.
The work
A large glass jar stands in a dim room. It is full of dark stones. Its red lid carries a number, 003. Behind it, a cloth covers a shape on a bed. Aniket Dharmendra Varma paints in oil, layer by layer. He does not draw a plan first. "The daily experiences became the sketch," he says, "and I painted it." His work grows from memories of the past and the present. Varma trained in classical painting at Sir J.J. School of Art, where he now studies for his MFA.
