Memory Embedded in Farming Land

A field remembered in ash, jute and thumbprints

Grey dust the colour of a field after burning.
The weave of a jute sack pressed into it, again and again.
In one corner an old stamp paper. Below it, inked thumbs in rows.
Names written by hand, then fading into ash.
A dark tool shape hangs near the far edge.
The canvas has the outline of a plot no one has measured.

The work

Priyotosh Ghosh comes from Basahari, a farming community in Birbhum, West Bengal. The materials in this work come from farm life. Ghosh uses ash from straw, rice husk and cow dung. Jute leaves the print of its weave on a shaped canvas. Ghosh does not fully control how the ash spreads. Those changes stay in the work. Faint handwriting and rows of thumbprints sit inside the grey, like old land papers slowly turning back into soil.

In the artist’s words

“I grew up in Basahari, a farming community in Birbhum, West Bengal. For me, the land is not just a place. It carries memories of people, farming, seasonal changes, labour and knowledge passed from one generation to another. I want the viewer to experience the land through the actual textures, smells, marks and changes within the materials.”
