Ajay Kushwah
Maa ki karuna
She holds the fawn the way soil holds a seed
Her hands are a cup of moss.
The fawn inside is the only warm brown thing.
Her arms carry the lines of old bark.
Below her lap the green spills out and grows roots.
The sky behind her is honey and fire.
She looks down and does not hurry.
The work
The title means a mother's compassion. A woman holds a small spotted fawn in her cupped hands. Her skin is green and lined like bark. Below her waist she becomes a hill of earth with pale roots running through it. Behind her the sky burns orange and red. The work is acrylic on a square canvas of 91 × 91 cm. The artist lives in Delhi and has loved the sky, animals and birds since childhood. Here he shows a person as part of nature.
In the artist’s words
“Through my art I aim to depict the complex and symbiotic relationship between humans and the natural world. My approach is to show humanity as an integral part of nature. Nature is the only thing without which humans are incomplete. If there is no nature, life is not possible.”
