Lost
Every shoe is clear. The face is not
Green squares climb the walls like tiles in a pool.
Four yellow lamps hang warm and low.
A man in a soft beige jumper leans to fit a white sneaker.
Where his face should be there is only the dark blue of the chair.
A bare foot waits at the edge of the rug.
Open boxes. Hands holding a second pair.
The room keeps its secret in small coloured blocks.
The work
Lost is an oil painting on canvas from 2025 by Bhaskar Thakur of Kala Bhavana in Santiniketan, West Bengal. A man sits in a blue armchair and fits a white shoe to his foot. Hands at the left hold another shoe. Open boxes lie on the floor. Thakur paints the clothes, hands and shoes with care. He breaks the room and the man's face into small squares of colour. For Thakur, this blur is a political stance. It lets queer intimacy appear without forced exposure.
In the artist’s words
“I soft-focus everything in my work as a deliberate way to push back against a world that demands everything be clear-cut and locked into rigid boxes. Obscurity is my political stance: a refusal of fixed appearances and binary truths. This haziness mirrors how queer life feels: uncertain, anticipatory and constantly negotiated between visibility and erasure.”
