Lost in Time
The toys she waited for were already fading
Pink walls the colour of a cheek pressed to a pillow.
A yellow roof drawn in faint lines holds a sun and a small girl.
The dark blanket is stitched with short pale marks like counted days.
She sleeps with a boxed doll against her chest.
Below her three pink children fall upside down
and thin into the cloth before anyone calls them to play.
The work
Almaa Solkar paints Lost in Time in oil on paper in 2026. Her college is Devrukh College of Art and Design in Ratnagiri. The painting comes from her childhood. Solkar was told to wait for toys. By the time she was allowed to play with them, some had decayed. In the painting a grown woman lies on a dark blanket and holds a doll shut inside a box. Small pink figures tumble beside her and fade into the cloth.
In the artist’s words
“This painting is about childhood and deferred play. As a child I was told to wait for toys. By the time I was allowed, some toys had decayed. The larger adult figure reaches back toward that lost moment. A doll locked in a box represents memories shut away. Small childlike figures merge into the background, fading in that suspended time.”
