Limelight
The light moves faster than the man it falls on
Red cloth fills the top of the frame, warm as a stove.
The glasses catch a little pink from the sign behind.
A white bar of light lies across the face, striped like a shutter.
The beard loosens into straw and smoke and gold.
Nothing stays still long enough to be named.
Yet he is here, looking out through the glare.
The work
Limelight is a 2023 photograph by Mohit of Amity University, Haryana. It measures 16.5 × 11.7 cm. A man in a red turban and glasses seems to move in the frame. His white beard blurs into gold. A curve of white light cuts across his face. Mohit comes to photography from painting. He looks at colour, texture and layers as a painter does. He wants an image that stays true to life but is more than a record. He observes, selects and reworks until it feels honest.
In the artist’s words
“I wanted to look at an ordinary subject from a different perspective and see what it tells us about people, culture and everyday life. I did not want the work to be only a record, but I did not want to lose its connection to reality. Photography can preserve a moment and also be a way of thinking about memory.”
