Landscape
Seventeen layers of carved wood to hold one glowing sky
Night has settled on the fields but the sky will not close.
Grey rings spread out like water when a stone goes in.
At the centre a white light burns behind the trees.
The trees stand black and still. They do not look up.
Seventeen times the ink goes down, each time slower than a click.
You stand here with no screen in your hand. You only look.
The work
Saurav Jyoti Bordoloi makes this woodcut from the Kopai riverside in Santiniketan. The print, titled Landscape I, is built from 17 layers in black, dark blue and grey. Trees and hills sit dark in front. Behind them, rings of cloud open around a bright glow. Bordoloi sees the slow work of carving as the opposite of a camera's quick click. He calls his shapes 'analogue pixels'. He comes from Nagaon and his college is Visva-Bharati University.
In the artist’s words
“The friction in his works lies in the process. The slow, rhythmic labour of carving wood stands in direct opposition to the instantaneous 'click' of a camera. By rendering nature as a series of 'analogue pixels', he aims to provoke the viewer into recognising the thin, glowing veil that now stands between humanity and the environment.”
