Shriharsh Chari
Jar
A jug made of wool that will never pour
Mustard and red go round and round, a count kept in the hands.
The handle bends like an arm resting on a hip.
The lid sits close with one small bead on top.
No tea will steam inside this pot.
Only the warm light of a rented room
and the long hours of a mother's loops.
The work
Shriharsh Chari makes a jug that cannot hold water. Jar is made of wool. It rises in bands of mustard yellow and deep pink. It has a curved handle, a lid and a small round knob on top. Chari's mother taught the artist to crochet. She learned it from Chari's grandmother. Here many hours of loops and counting build a common household object, 35.5 cm tall. The soft form asks a quiet question. What makes a place feel like home?
In the artist’s words
“My art practice mainly explores wool and crochet in relation to memory, family, home and everyday life. I learned crochet from my mother, who learned it from my grandmother. I use familiar objects and household forms. By changing their scale, material or context, I try to give ordinary things a different presence and meaning.”
