Inner landscapes
Every line carries a feeling, some planned and some not
A tower of grey and red leans into a pale yellow sky.
A dark oval sits on the cream form like a seed full of small cells.
Thin marks climb up the middle, fine as grass after rain.
In the blue on the right, a sunset hides behind glass.
Brown waves roll along the bottom and never break.
Every line here is someone thinking.
The work
Aniket Dharmendra Varma is studying for his MFA in Painting at Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai. In Inner landscapes he uses line to show human feelings and behaviour. Some lines come from a plan. Others come from a less awake part of the mind. A grey drawing sits beside the painting in the image. It holds the same shapes: a tall tower, a dark round form, rows of waves. In oil, Varma builds these shapes in layers of colour.
In the artist’s words
“In this work I have tried to express human behaviours, feelings and emotions in various kinds of lines. How lines can become more sensitive and expressive with the approach of the conscious and subconscious. The visual experience with lines.”
