Tithi Gain
Inner complex
The same face, six times, each wearing a different expectation
Black lines scratched deep, the same calm face, the same small dot on the forehead.
Blue rings sit over the eyes like borrowed glasses.
Red blooms on the cheeks and hangs from the ears.
A green ring pulls at the nose. Red seeds fall across the skin.
Gold lifts from the hair in loose ends.
Purple closes over the head and marks the brow.
Under every colour she keeps looking straight at us.
The work
Tithi Gain prints the same face six times. The image is scratched into a plate in drypoint and printed in black on paper. Each sheet is 35.56 × 30.48 cm. Gain then changes every face with one colour: blue shapes over the eyes, red on the cheeks, a green nose ring, red dots on the skin, gold hair, purple on the head and brow. Gain is from Basirhat. Her course is the M.F.A. at the University of Hyderabad. Her work looks at the rules that shape women's lives.
In the artist’s words
“Through my work, I try to explore and describe the idea of womanhood and the different experiences that shape women's lives. I use different materials to represent women's everyday lives, struggles, emotions and the social expectations they carry. My practice focuses on the ways patriarchal rules and beliefs influence women and their relationships with society.”
