Tanishq Pratap Singh
Imbroglio
Crystals in her hair cannot lift her lowered head
A grey head bends toward the bottom of the canvas.
The lashes are long and the eye stays closed.
Hair rises like smoke and holds small points of light.
A black knot of charcoal sits in the curls.
Paint runs down from the neck in thin lines.
A little blue gathers below like cold water.
One dry petal drifts away on the pale cloth.
The work
In Imbroglio a street cow from Rudrapur lowers her head. Tanishq Pratap Singh photographs the cows on his street with his phone. Then he sketches them by hand. Here he works in charcoal, inks and oil on canvas. He adds dried lily petals from his garden and Swarovski crystals. He is testing how shiny crystals can hide or overpower the hard facts of daily life. The cow still asks his quiet question. Are we all okay?
In the artist’s words
“I paint how suffering quietly becomes normal in everyday life. Street cows make it easy for me to show this. Sometimes I see my own condition in them. I am examining how seductive commercial materials like Swarovski crystals can conceal or overpower the absurd, enduring realities of daily life. My work gently asks: are we all okay?”
