I lit up the highest when I was burned
The candle melts. Something inside the flame stands up
Orange wax slides down in slow drips.
At the wick a dark purple flower opens.
Out of it a pale body rises with arms wide.
A small fire sits in each palm like something carried home.
Rings of gold and brown spread into the dark.
The candle grows shorter. The light grows taller.
The work
Vishakha Gautam paints moments of change. This acrylic work from 2023 measures 50.8 × 40.64 cm. A tall orange candle stands against a dark ground. The wax melts and runs down its sides. Inside the golden flame a pale figure opens its arms. A small flame burns in each hand. The figure rises from a dark purple flower at the wick. Gautam works in New Delhi. Gautam usually begins with a feeling and lets each painting change along the way.
In the artist’s words
“The paintings I've shared here are about breakthroughs, transformation, finding strength after difficult experiences and growing into a different version of yourself. I use acrylics, colour, movement and simple symbols to turn feelings into something visual. Each painting has its own idea, but there is usually a personal emotion behind it.”
