Shriharsh Chari
House
A home made of knots and the empty spaces between them
Cream thread on a grey ground, held up by two white pins.
A grid of small windows, each one left open.
In the middle the stitches close up tight like a wall.
Light passes through the edges but not the centre.
I count the squares and lose my place.
Somewhere a mother's hands are still moving.
The work
Shriharsh Chari makes House from pale thread, one loop at a time. It measures 20 × 15 cm. Open squares form a grid around the edges. In the centre, close stitches fill in a solid shape. Each square is counted. The skill comes from home. It passes from grandmother to mother to Chari. Living in rented houses makes Chari ask what turns a place into a home. The artist studies at the Sarojini Naidu School of Art and Communication in Hyderabad. Chari is based in Bicholim.
In the artist’s words
“I learned crochet from my mother, who learned it from my grandmother. I am interested in the repetitive process of making knots and loops, where counting, time and labour become part of the work. My experience of living in rented houses has made me question what makes a place feel like home and where we feel we belong.”
