Home
One open door, one sleeping cat, a forest full of fireflies
The door is open and the light inside is the colour of ripe mango.
A white cat lies across the step like a folded cloth.
The roof keeps its red even in the dark.
All around, the trees hold small green lamps.
Fireflies prick the night with yellow pins.
No one is calling you in.
The house waits anyway.
The work
Arthik studies at the Sarojini Naidu School of Arts and Communication. The artist has lived away from home for nearly four years. Home grows out of that distance. It is a small painting, 13 × 25 cm, in poster colour and watercolour. A house with a red roof stands alone in a dark forest at night. Yellow lights float between the trees. A white cat sleeps at the open door. Arthik paints from memory and goes back to childhood, pets and the nature around the house.
In the artist’s words
“I think we come to realise the importance of home, childhood and our surroundings through distance. I have been far from home for nearly four years and I have come to realise the importance and closeness of home. All these became memories: pets, childhood days, surrounding nature, the pure experience of home and all the intimate things.”
