Flight of fancy
A whole night sky lands on the tip of her nose
A butterfly lands on the bridge of her nose.
Her eyes turn in to meet it, two brown moons in yellow rings.
On its wings a night sky turns, blue and gold and full of small stars.
The same sky waits under her collar, as if she swallowed it.
Pink suns sit on her cheeks.
Tiny red flowers hold her straw-gold hair in place.
The work
Amrita Kumar draws Flight of fancy in 2023. She wants her art to show wonder and to help people tune out the noise of the world. Before she starts, Kumar studies vintage art, impressionist art, fairy tales and children's storybooks. In this drawing a girl with a yellow bob looks cross-eyed at a butterfly on her nose. Its wings hold a swirling night sky. The same sky fills her collar. Kumar tries not to think too much while she draws. She lets the parts come together on their own.
In the artist’s words
“I wanted to create art that shows a sense of wonder and is whimsical. Art that transports people into a land of wondrous oblivion, tunes out the noise of the world and makes them believe in hope, joy and mystique. In doodle art it is important not to think too much. Logic has no place in doodling.”
