Eyeof the soul
Fish swim past an eye that holds the whole sea
Blue comes down from the top and is left to run.
An eye opens in the middle of it, wet and wide.
Fish with copper tails cross the iris like slow thoughts.
White roses float at the corners, half washed away.
At the bottom the colour gives up in thin lines.
Bare canvas waits there, white as morning paper.
The work
Prachi Vishwakarma paints Eye of the Soul in acrylic on canvas. She studies at Raja Mansingh Tomar Music and Arts University in Bhopal. One large eye sits at the centre of a deep blue field. Dark fish with copper fins swim around it. Pale roses gather near the edges. Thin paint runs down and stops above bare white canvas. Vishwakarma often works with eyes, water and flowers. She keeps changing colours and forms until a painting feels right. The hard part, she says, is knowing when to stop.
In the artist’s words
“I used things like flowers, water, eyes, animals, feminine forms and spiritual imagery because they helped me express ideas that were sometimes difficult to explain with words. I like the idea that two people can look at the same painting and feel something completely different.”
