Evening in city
A small town of cut paper, leaning into the night
White roofs lean on each other like tired neighbours.
Each house keeps one black eye open.
The card under them is the colour of dust and tea.
A half moon sinks behind a wall of red.
Stairs climb into shadow and stop.
Someone has stitched one wall shut with small black marks.
The hills at the top are only cut brown paper and they hold.
The work
Debjit Ghoshal cuts white paper into small houses and lays them over brown card and bands of red. Then he works into the paper with oil colour. A whole town fits on a square of mount board 10 cm wide. Ghoshal studies at The Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship. As a child, talking did not come easily to him. He spoke through cut paper instead. In this evening scene the houses tilt and press together. Familiar shapes are broken, so the place feels half seen and half remembered.

Previously I was a self-taught artist from class 4 to high school. After that I took the practice seriously. From childhood I was not able to talk fluently as an normal person, so I expressed myself or my expressions through cutting papers, by drawing on walls, making something by using dough by that time I observe the everything , nature to human behavioral changes and also environments around me—architecture, streets, structures, textures, and changing cityscapes—and transform these observations into layered visual compositions. I work with different mediums and techniques, including watercolour, gouache,…
