Sushil Yadav
Entwined Roots
What holds us together can also hold us in
Pink-brown clay, pressed all over with small marks like fish scales.
Two rings sit one above the other, each with a round dark hole that looks back at you.
Thick coils loop through them, an arm, a root, a knot you cannot follow.
At the top the coils climb free and reach in three directions.
Grey smoke from the fire still rests on the clay.
Below, black stone. Behind, a white wall. The earth stands up on its own.
The work
Sushil Yadav grew up in a village in Kushinagar district. There he watched mud houses break down in the rain and go back into the soil. He asks what stays when a home is gone. Yadav builds his figures out of terracotta, coil by coil. In Entwined Roots, bodies and roots wind through each other inside two rings of clay. You cannot tell where one person ends. The roots stand for the ties we cannot see. He is studying for an MVA in Sculpture in Lucknow.
In the artist’s words
“Bodies and roots wind through each other inside rings of clay. The rings hold them together. They also hold them in.”
