“Enlightenment of Buddha”
Many small cuts in wood around one calm face
Black ink holds the dark of the forest.
White leaves fall in thin lines around a still head.
The halo spreads out like rings in a cut tree.
His hands rest in his lap, one over the other.
The petals of the lotus seat curl up like small flames.
At the edges, carved flowers keep watch.
The work
Aman Kumar makes this woodcut in 2025 at RIMT University in Ludhiana. He carves into the wood block to get deep blacks and clean white spaces. The Buddha sits on a lotus seat under a large tree. A forest stands behind him. A carved border of leaves and flowers frames the scene. Kumar says the border is the hardest part. He must cut it evenly and still keep the seated figure calm at the centre. The print measures about 71 × 56 cm.
In the artist’s words
“I worked with woodcut, carving into the block to create intense, graphic blacks and crisp white negative spaces. With the Buddha prints, the difficulty was purely compositional. Carving that intricate decorative border uniformly while making sure the central figure kept its quiet, focal serenity required an exhausting amount of patience.”
