Destortion

A city folded flat and pressed into paper

Teal pressed into paper like wet slate after rain.
A seam of rust runs through the middle, low sun on an old wall.
White scratches cut sideways, thin as cracks in plaster.
Two pale squares wait in the grey dust below, windows with the glass gone.
Everything is creased, as if the city was folded and opened again.
The silence has a grain you could press your thumb into.

The work

Debjit Ghoshal, of Uttarpara, studies at The Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship. He watches streets, buildings and changing cities. Then he breaks what he sees into layers. This collagraph is printed on Canson paper. A collagraph comes from a plate built up from textured material. Here a crumpled surface fills the dark teal top half. A band of rust crosses the centre. Pale squares with a fine grid sit low in the frame. Ghoshal does not copy a place. He bends it towards memory.

In the artist’s words

“Rather than directly reproducing a place, I often distort and break familiar forms to create spaces that exist between reality and memory. Experimentation with material, surface, layering and texture is an important part of my process. I consider painting a process of discovering rather than simply illustrating an idea.”
