Decapitated Civilization
A city of stone stands headless under a green moon
A green moon hangs low and holds its breath.
Red stone stands in pillars, cut off at the top.
Thin white lines trace each edge like old chalk.
Between two towers a doorway glows the colour of young leaves.
The sky is deep blue water poured over everything.
Nothing moves. The city waits for no one.
The work
Asmita Das studies at The Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship in Kolkata. In Decapitated Civilization Das paints a broken city of rock under a green moon. The work uses the wash technique with watercolour on 300gsm Canson paper. Colour spreads softly across the sheet. Das finds this slow process calm. It helps to quiet the mind. Here the hard shapes of buildings and stone become simple forms made of light, colour and composition.
In the artist’s words
“I like to use the wash technique of painting most of the time because I find the whole process very peaceful and calming. I merge complicated structures of buildings, objects and nature with my experiment of simplifying the complicated with light, colour and composition. I paint this way so that I can calm my mind even within the chaos.”
