Ram Vishal
Creator
Under the flute player, a machine of gears keeps turning
White lines pull light out of a black sheet.
A crown of rings opens like the inside of a shell.
Four hands rest on the dark as if it were a table.
A flute player sits still and the music is only a line.
Under him, gears turn with small signs on their faces.
An old man keeps his eyes down while grey moons drift past.
The work
Ram Vishal draws Creator in white on a black sheet with charcoal, pencil and white glass marking. Every line he puts down is light. At the top, a four-armed figure sits inside rings of pattern. Below it, a young man plays a flute. At the base, gears with small symbols turn around the face of an old bearded man. Planets float around them. Vishal's college is Graphic Era Hill University in Dehradun. This 2023 work is one of eight in his collection. The sheet is 50 × 70 cm.
In the artist’s words
“There were moments when the artwork did not turn out the way I had imagined. I had to make changes, correct mistakes and try different approaches. I treated these difficulties as opportunities to understand my medium better. Art is not only about a finished painting. It is also about observing, solving problems and being patient with the work.”
