Sushil Yadav
Composition 2
A body that has not let go of the tree
Orange clay, pressed and pitted like bark that has not hardened yet.
One body or two, leaning into one shape, arms thrown out to the side.
Under their feet the branches end in round open holes.
The stump below is grey and green, turning blue at its tips.
Warm skin on old wood, held up by what it holds.
A soft grey room and no wind at all.
The work
Sushil Yadav builds his people out of terracotta, coil by coil. Here a figure sits on an old tree stump. Roots wrap around its body. For Yadav these roots are not plants. They stand for the ties we cannot see. The work asks how much we need nature. It also asks how hard it is to stay close to it while everything around us changes. Yadav is in the final year of an MVA in Sculpture in Lucknow. The work is on the cover of Issue One.
