Gungun
Commission work
A half smile, held still in pencil and charcoal grey
Grey, then darker grey, then the white of the paper left alone.
His hair lifts like a wave stopped before it breaks.
The eyes hold still. The mouth has not quite decided to smile.
Small crossed lines make a shirt you could almost touch.
A thin chain catches what little light there is.
On the desk he lies quiet, waiting to be seen.
The work
Gungun draws this portrait in 2024 with charcoal and pencil on a sheet of paper 21 × 29.7 cm. A young man looks straight out at us. His hair sweeps up and back in soft, dark strokes. A thin moustache and a short beard frame a half smile. Fine crossed lines build the checks of his collared shirt. A thin chain rests at his throat. Around him the paper stays almost bare. Gungun signs the drawing to his left. The artist works in Yamuna Nagar.
In the artist’s words
“I was trying to capture a specific mood and moment, something too subtle to put into plain words. I wanted the piece to feel honest, personal and easy to connect with. In the end, it is not about perfect technique for me. I hope when you look at it, you feel the same quiet connection I felt while making it.”
