Childhood
Two children ride out while the mice take the hill
The sky is turmeric, stitched with a thousand small red loops.
Mice pour over it like grey ribbon, tails curling into question marks.
One carries a leaf for shade. One carries a red flower up the hill.
Two children sit pressed together on a cart, bare feet in the brown earth.
The older one holds the handle and looks ahead.
A mouse rests in her lap as if it has always lived there.
The work
Tridisha Dutta paints from her own childhood photographs. She uses them as a starting point. Then she changes the figures and adds motifs and designs from traditional art forms. In Childhood two children sit close together on a small cart with wheels. Grey mice leap across a yellow sky and gather on a hill of leaves. Animals often share the picture with people in Dutta's work. She makes this painting with natural extract colours. Dutta studies painting at Assam University in Silchar and comes from Nalbari in Assam.
In the artist’s words
“Most of my works are inspired by my childhood photographs and memories. I use these photographs as references, but I change the figures by adding my own ideas, motifs and designs inspired by traditional art forms. I sometimes combine animal forms with human figures to create new forms and meanings. These works are made with natural colours.”
