Between desires and control
Two hands reach in. Only one of them holds a key
A boy looks down at his own shoulder.
Blue gathers under his eyes like the edge of evening.
From the left an arm comes in, open and waiting.
From the right a closed hand holds out one small key.
Behind him the sky runs in wet bands of red and yellow.
He turns toward neither.
The work
Siddharth paints this small oil on canvas in New Delhi in 2026. A boy stands with his back half turned and looks down. One arm reaches in from the left. A closed hand on the right holds out a small key. Keys and locks return again and again in Siddharth's work. They come from a life spent between family homes and rented spaces. The paint sits in soft dragged bands behind him. The work measures 30.48 × 30.48 × 2.54 cm.
In the artist’s words
“I have lived between family homes and rented spaces. Carrying a key can hold memories, responsibilities, aspirations and the desire for stability. For me, locks and keys are not merely objects. They are metaphors for access and exclusion, confinement and liberation, fear and possibility. At times, the figures become self-portraits.”
