Batik
A stone arena held in cloth, cracked by wax and dye
Gold arches rise out of a brown dusk.
Each doorway holds a small night of its own.
Thin dark veins cross the pale sky like rain on old glass.
Below, flat stones of honey and moss lie still in the shade.
A few trees lean in at the edge, warm as late sun.
The cloth keeps every crack the wax let in.
The work
Ayushi Singh comes from Sandila. Her college is Banaras Hindu University. In this batik from 2025 she shows the Colosseum in Rome. Its tall arches stand in gold and deep brown above a wide ground of flat stones. Fine dark lines run across the pale sky like cracks in old plaster. These lines come from the batik process itself. Singh says her projects often begin with looking closely at architecture. She also lets the material guide part of the work. The piece measures 59 × 42 cm.

Textile design allows me to explore these connections through making. I enjoy working with processes such as printing, embroidery, weaving, tapestry, and surface manipulation because they give me time to understand the material. I am interested in the small details that appear through handwork—the irregularity of a…
