Afternoon Arrangement
A blue vase, two pears and the slow gold of afternoon
Blue petals turn around a white belly of clay.
A pear leans close to a red fruit that glows like a small lamp.
Inside the glass something red holds still like a held breath.
The cloth spills off the table, heavy as wine.
On the wall a slant of light goes soft and warm.
It is the hour when the house is quiet
and colour is the loudest thing in the room.
The work
Almaa Solkar is from Devrukh College of Art and Design in Ratnagiri. Afternoon Arrangement is an oil painting on paper from 2025. It measures 81 × 63 cm. A tall blue and white vase stands at the centre. Around it sit a green vase, a glass vessel with a brown neck, two pears and a pomegranate. A dark red cloth hangs over the table. Solkar wants the feeling of late afternoon light. She makes the colours strong and paints the patterns with care to keep the picture fresh.
In the artist’s words
“Afternoon Arrangement gathers brightly coloured pots and vivid fruits to evoke late-afternoon light and youthful energy. I emphasised saturated colours and decorative details to keep the composition fresh and lively.”
