AFTERMATH
Three windows onto a city after something has broken
Orange rises like a wall still warm from fire.
Two white crosses mark what will not stand again.
Blue runs low across the ground, a road under smoke.
White scratches cut through the brown like rain on dust.
In the last square small roofs lean close together.
White arrows point up and away, toward somewhere still standing.
The work
Debjit Ghoshal is a young artist from Uttarpara. He studies at The Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship. He taught himself to draw from class four to high school. As a child he could not speak with ease, so he cut paper, drew on walls and shaped dough. Aftermath is three square panels in tempera on paper. Ghoshal does not copy a place. He breaks familiar forms into layers. He calls painting "a process of discovering rather than simply illustrating an idea."

Previously I was a self-taught artist from class 4 to high school. After that I took the practice seriously. From childhood I was not able to talk fluently as an normal person, so I expressed myself or my expressions through cutting papers, by drawing on walls, making something by using dough by that time I observe the everything , nature to human behavioral changes and also environments around me—architecture, streets, structures, textures, and changing cityscapes—and transform these observations into layered visual compositions. I work with different mediums and techniques, including watercolour, gouache,…
