A voice that refuses to fade

Three young faces turn toward a history still being written

Three faces turn toward the same unseen point.
A turban the colour of ripe wheat holds the light.
Behind it, a gold hoop, a green shirt, a backpack strap worn for the day.
Then dark curls and a blue hood, the youngest chin lifted.
The sky fades from grey to dust.
Across the corner a maroon band cuts in, carrying the old cry in white letters.

The work

Mayank Athwal makes this work in Adobe Photoshop. Three young people stand in profile and look the same way. A Sikh man in a yellow turban and white shirt leads. A young woman with a backpack and a young man in a blue hoodie stand behind him. Words run across the top and a dark red band carries the slogan "Inqlaab Zindabad". Athwal studies old paintings of Punjab and Sikh history. Here that study meets the bold look of a modern poster.

In the artist’s words

“The three artworks submitted for this exhibition are part of my continuing interest in history, Punjab and Sikh visual culture. Each artwork reflects my attempt to study the past, take inspiration from historical artistic traditions and transform those influences into my own digital illustrations.”
